The Midnight Leaves Soutache Statement Necklace

Midnight Leaves

This soutache statement necklace by Nancy Donaldson was commissioned to showcase our fabulous line of soutache cords.  The necklace was displayed in our “New Innovations” booth at the Craft and Hobby show earlier this month.

In our It’s Soutache manual written by Fernando DaSilva (released in the fall of 2014) Soutache was described “as one of those materials that defines not only a look but also a whole technique.  Recently, Soutache has become popular among many European designers excited by the endless possibilities this material provides to their creations.  The technique requires a lot of precision and a certain finesse to handle and stitch trims together.”  There are many applications for this fantastic trim and the main rule is that you must insert your needle in the centre of the soutache groove with every stitch.  That can be challenging and requires practice.

When we released our Soutache manual, Nancy was given an early copy along with some of our cords to experiment.   (she is a regular contributor of projects on this blog)  We assumed that she might make a few of the projects in the book.  We never imagined she would immerse herself into soutache, teaching herself new and unorthodox ways to use the cord.  Our Creative Director Fernando DaSilva recognized her talent immediately and met with her to select a color palette and theme for this necklace.

Many recognized soutache jewellers pre-plan their designs with mathematical precision.  Nancy is much more free with her designs.   She creates individual pieces that are collaged together.  She does not glue her sections into one single backing pad.

Her piece is also unique because some sections are left open.  The sections that are padded showcase our fish leather in a way that sets Nancy apart from other soutache designers.  Our fabulous tilapia leather created the perfect texture when paired with soutache trims and beads.   Her finished necklace is not stiff.  It conforms to curves on the body beautifully.  She also created matching cuffs that sit perfectly on a wrist.

The cabochons used by her in this necklace are “JB Vintage Atelier.”  Selected by Fernando just for this design they are incorporated in a way that is fresh and appealing.  We are proud to showcase this new soutache designer’s masterpiece.

Halloween Inspiration!

Don’t be frightened to plan your Halloween projects, classes or costumes!  We have plenty of beads, skulls, trims, feathers, masks, sequins and more to make this occasion easy to organize.

Here are a few of my favorite things for Halloween costumes, jewelry and decorating from our Catalog.

Crystal, Neon and Fimo Disc Bracelet Collection

Fernando DaSilva made this collection of bracelets to showcase some of the new glass beads in the Dazzle-it collection.

The bracelets feature fimo discs that Fernando embellished with crystal flat backs.

These fimo discs are 80% off!

The hot pink is of course my favorite!  These neon colours are completely on trend right now.

The link to the new glass neon beads is right here.

The link to all the neon crystal donuts is here.

The 80% off fimo discs are linked here.

Hemp and Ori Crystals

This little bracelet is a simple way to showcase both my crystals and some pink hemp.

The Dazzle-It Eco Friendly hemp is a friendly alternative to cotton and other synthetic cord and stringing materials.  I have several sets!

The Spring Colours Hemp 100% Natural 1mm 20lb ( 4×29.9ft) palette is a favorite!

I selected crystal clear and pink round cut Ori crystals for my bracelet.  Doesn’t the hemp look great in this super easy overhand knot? The 1mm hemp cord passed through the bead with ease!

The finishing detail was my fancy heart toggle set.

Hemp stringing material is available at John Bead in many different colours, sizes and lengths!

Hemp is on sale this month too!

A Little Coral Goes A Long Way

It took me a very long time to finish this simple necklace.  The coral beads have been haunting my table ever since I brought them home after a planning meeting at John Bead.

The bamboo coral beads can be quite intimidating in one long strand.  I can see how a few people would make one fabulous necklace by just restringing the original strand.  It isn’t a look I could pull off.  So I decided to just pick three pieces to start a coral project.

My strand uses the bamboo coral, natural coral dyed chips, SWAROVSKI ROUND
8mm LUMINOUS GREEN CRYSTAL
and on the necklace I also added SWAROVSKI TWIST 14mm LUMINOUS GREEN Crystals.

I love this colour!  Choosing it took some time though….

I had more than a few options at my disposal.

I tried Chinese Crystal donuts in jet.  Hmmm.  Still like this.

Then I thought why not capture the look of water with a teal crystal beadHave you seen the new Dazzle-It Ori Crystals?  The choices are unbelievable.

Had to see what pearls would look like…..picking a pearl at John Bead is even harder when you see their options.

This was my second favorite option.  It really is a salute to summer and underwater elements.

The coral is still stealing the show…but it doesn’t overwhelm the final piece.

And, with so many coral pieces left over (over 25) from the original strand, I could make up every sample shown!

How To Save Over $1000 Euros!

This bracelet is the perfect showcase for the new Ori Crystals.  They just sparkle and I love the donut shape!

It was inspired by this Sidney Evan bracelet I recently viewed.  His bracelet features gemstones and a diamond encrusted gold elephant.  His bracelet costs over $1200 Euros….and I did notice it is strung on elastic!

So I thought why not make one myself…..for under $20 dollars!  Believe it or not in my stash I discovered three elephants.  I often buy old jewelry and break it up for the interesting components.

I pulled out some crystal flat backs and used our new Quick Grip glue to apply them to my plain elephant.

Once again, I have to say that the Quick Grip worked perfectly!

All I had left to do was string my teal ori crystals onto elastic with the elephant and I was done!
