Out of This World Tiered Necklace for Perles et Cetera Magazine

I have been thinking a lot about our planet lately. Our connection to the sun and the other planets in our solar system are mysteries we have yet to truly unlock. With these thoughts in mind I attempted to create a necklace that would showcase our solar system in a necklace. I felt like I was back in high school as I tried to remember the order of our planets and what their most basic colours were.

The first step was to find beads that would resemble the planets. Happily, my company John Bead Corp has a rather large selection of semi-precious beads. Our solar system has eight “official” planets, which orbit the Sun. I reviewed the planet colours on “Ask an Astronomer” and selected the matching semi-precious beads that would work best on my necklace.  Amazonite beads are usually in a mixed color strand. You will find beads that are pale blue to brown with this gemstone. I also used yellow jade for my gold Saturn, red jasper for Mars, agate for orange and white Jupiter and some sodalite for Earth’s white and blue.

The planets, in order of their distance from the Sun, are Mercury (Gray), Venus (pale Yellow), Earth (blue and white), Mars (reddish brown), Jupiter (orange and white bands), Saturn (pale gold), Uranus (pale blue) and Neptune (pale blue).  This printed solar system became my template. I did not want too much empty space in the middle of my piece, so I went with five strands instead of eight.

I chose a pretty yellow jade pendant for my sun. I knew the first strand on this tiered necklace needed to be centered properly with a focal piece. I used a good beading wire to create all five unique tiers. Once the first tier was measured and the pendant was in place, I was able to set all the planets in locations similar to how they looked on my printed solar system map.

My rough measurements for strand lengths did not help. I quickly realized my strands were going to need tweaking and I had to “eyeball” each tier.

Since I needed to see where each “planet” would be set it was easier to set aside my ruler and use my own judgment for the right lengths. In order to ensure that each tier would hang properly I needed to cut slightly longer lengths of stringing wire so I could add or subtract wire depending on where my planets were. Taping my tiers was a very helpful part of the process.

When I figured out where a planet needed to be, I marked my wire, set a crimp in place and flattened it. Then I strung my bead and placed and flattened a second crimp to keep it secure on the wire. For tier two, I only had one bead to set.

I finished both ends of each wire with an Ez-Crimp. I taped each tier to my board to keep the strands sorted and the wire properly shaped.

I used jump rings to attach all my finished tiers to five-hole coupling bars. A lobster clasp and jump ring completed the necklace. It was fun and relaxing to get all the beads set. I started to get really good at flattening my crimp beads too!

I think my finished necklace does indeed resemble our solar system!

(P.S. I thought long and hard about adding Pluto, even though it isn’t considered a planet anymore. I might just attach a small dangling bead to represent it.)

What You Need

  • John Bead Corp 8mm Carnelian Semi Precious Beads 27600623-02  (2)
  • John Bead Corp 8mm Red Wood Beads 286519-03  (3)
  • John Bead Red Cotton Tassel 1543410-09 (4)
  • TierraCast Wing Charm 94-2341  (4)
  • Beadalon Elastic Cord Needle (1)
  • John Bead Stretch Bead Cord 25003000-01
  • Jump ring to add wing and tassel

The bracelet featured is considered a “large” size which is 7 1/4 inches long.

You add to your needle:  5 wood beads + 6 carnelian beads + the jump ring with dangles + 6 carnelian beads + 6 wood beads to make a size 7 ¼ wrist size.

Working with a ruler you can add and subtract wood beads. The Beadalon stainless steel elastic cord needle allows you to plan out your design.

Cut a generous amount of stretch cord (elastic) for the stringing part of the project. I used four times the length of my bracelet.

I wanted my elastic to be double thickness so I placed the cord into the threader hook so that I had equal amounts of stretch cord on either side of the loop.

Once the stretch cord was ready I simply pushed my beads off the needle onto the cord.

A good knot holds the bracelet together. You can add a tiny bit of glue to the stretch cord knot for a little extra security.

References:

By the late 1930’s, Chanel’s necklaces had grown from single-strand chokers and sautoirs into bibs. In the early 1990s, Karl Lagerfeld occasionally paired Chanel haute-couture with over the top beaded jewelry. Currently, I have observed a comeback of the bib necklace, probably boosted by the opulent and luxurious jewelry worn on the movie “The Great Gatsby.”  Those were some of my influences to create this piece.

Inspiration:

I wanted to showcase the latest and newest products that we added to our Dazzle-it! line. The products are the main inspirational source for this design.   I wanted to create something to be paired with a day dress and I wanted it to turn people’s heads.  It needed to be something with a “zoom zoom zoom” about it.

The Divas Who Could Pull This Off:  Carmen Miranda and Erika Badu.

The Creating:

The bib section was designed first and then I created a triple twisted Kumihimo cord to use as the structure.  The cord needed to be strong enough to sustain the “cascade” of beads. I combined our fantastic Lovely Knots braided cords with a satin aquamarine cord. I think it is much more interesting than other types of Kumi and it speaks louder to my style. It has texture, depth and by using two different sizes of cords together I made it three dimensional.

I also wanted to display one of our newest end caps.  Multi strands cords can be glued-in so the ends are impeccably finished.

The biggest problem for me was deciding on the right material for the back section. After experimenting with a variety of materials, I finally decided that the piece was calling for something light and airy and the satin ribbon became my final choice. It also brought a French romantic edge to the piece that works perfectly with summer luncheons, brunches and lazy delicious sunset cocktails. It’s ultra chic but at the same time simple.

Technical info:

Bib section was created with:

blue and green dyed agate round beads, sizes 6, 8 and 10mm

light blue neon glass round beads sizes 6 and 8mm

kumihimo end cap

head pins and 7.5x8mm nickel color bead caps

Kumihimo section was created with:

2mm white and turquoise Lovely Knots cord and 3mm rattail aqua blue cord

Pliers used:

round nose, bent nose and flush cutters from our Japanese Pliers collection

Also:  BeadFix gel by Beadalon was used to attach cone ends.

The Guessing Game

Several weeks ago I posted this picture of the design in progress and asked our Facebook friends to fill in the blank:  Working on a new piece – a bib style necklace held by ______________.

The winning guesses are:

“Maybe Kumihimo with two colors of lovely knots and tassels” by Jennifer Hunt
“by beautfiul Dazzle It Grass Green and Aqua Blue Satin Cord!” by Deborah Daniels
” held by a kumihimo braid made with Chinese knotting cord” by AC Beads

Your excellent guesses made you winners.  You will receive a signed copy of my new book “Lovely Knots – An introduction to Chinese Knotting” accompanied by 2 small spools of Dazzle-it lovely knots braided cord.

There are so many interesting tribal trends this year.  The pops of colour are sure to make any project stand out and I have been having fun working with the new Dazzle-it semi-precious beads.

The bead collection in the catalog ensure endless choice.  This week I worked with fire polished crystal to showcase a petite green sea horse (see yesterday’s blog.)
