Blue Goldstone is a man-made stone. Its sparkle comes from flecks of copper. They say that Blue Goldstone is a helpful aide for children who are afraid of the dark. Goldstone, like diamond, is a good deflector of unwanted energies, and is highly regarded in the spirit realm as a protection mineral. “Called the Stone of Ambition, it is said that Goldstone will assist in attaining one’s goals. In keeping one’s emotions stable and calm, this energy generator revitalizes one’s personal energy field, building confidence, courage, a positive attitude and promotes vitality.” Our blue goldstone strands are linked here.
“The Hamsa Hand is an ancient Middle Eastern amulet symbolizing the Hand of God. In all faiths it is a protective sign. It brings its owner happiness, luck, health, and good fortune. The hamsa hand has a wide variety of different spellings which includes hamesh, hamsa, chamsa, and khamsa.”

The birthstone for August is Peridot. It is the official stone of Egypt and is rumored to have been Cleopatra’s gem of choice.
In ancient times, it was believed that the Peridot was a gift of Mother Nature to celebrate the annual creation of a new world. It is thought to contain positive energy and healing properties, especially when gifted. Said to instill power, and influence through the wearing of it. A symbol of fame, dignity, and protection it is associated with spirituality and self-expression.
The green’s intensity and tint depends on the percentage of iron that is contained in the crystal structure. The color of individual peridot gems can vary from yellow, to olive, to brownish-green. A peridot is a gem-quality variety of the mineral olivine. It belongs to the forsterite-fayalite mineral series and is a 6.5-7 out of 10 on the Mohs hardness scale.
John Bead has a limited selection of semi precious peridot beads and chips. We do however, have over 500 items that are a peridot colour.
We have had the opportunity to participate in several Make and Take events with our semi precious beads this spring. (The projects above will be featured in upcoming blog posts.)
There are many wonderful attributes associated with semi-precious gems and crystals. The more you learn about crystals the more confidence you will have in selecting beads to wear or giveaway. Or you can simply enjoy them for the beauty they already radiate.

I have started to use my kumihimo braids for different types of projects. This is my first kumihimo brooch.
This braid was already a finished necklace. It was longer than I liked, so I was about to shorten it when I decided to try something different instead.
I cut away the endcaps after I tied off the ends. Then I dipped these ends in a little Quik Grip glue.
I then sewed the braid into a circle and whip stitched a little bit of felt across the back to finish it. It is the sweetest brooch now!
I use my Dazzle-it kumihimo disk at least once a week. It is amazing that such a simple and inexpensive tool can be used to create so many different braids.
The center bead is from our semi-precious strand.
Wire wrapping friends will be delighted to hear that John Bead has several new items in the warehouse. For this sample I used 24 gauge square wire on a new Dazzle-It Botswana Agate Nugget.
Isn’t this a fabulous plier? Beadalon has two new wire banding pliers which work beautifully with their square wire. Each plier works with two sizes of wire.
Square wire makes your wrapping looking very elegant.
The pliers are very easy to use. I just wanted to bend wire!
The square wire is part of Beadalon’s Designer series.
It is available in three sizes:
Beadalon Stainless Steel Square 20ga 3m (9.8ft)
Beadalon Stainless Steel Square 22ga 6.5m (21.3ft)
Beadalon Stainless Steel Square 24 ga 10m (32.8ft)
