Step into the desert with Nichole Vogelsinger of Wild Boho as she shares her newest class, Desert Jewels. This project is all about technique, texture, and freedom of design. Instead of following a strict pattern, you’ll explore dimensional couching, layered cactus motifs, bead-studded details, and threadwork that turns your embroidery hoop into a desert landscape full of life.

In this tutorial, you’ll learn:

  • How to couch with thread and beads for dimension

  • Techniques for adding cactus shapes with macramé cord, seed beads, and bugles

  • Layering stitches to create sun, sky, grasses, and mountains

  • Tips for balancing color, bead finishes, and texture

  • Finishing methods to neatly complete and display your hoop

Every hoop will turn out differently — your desert can be bright and whimsical or subtle and earthy. Nichole encourages you to experiment with shapes, textures, and colors so your landscape reflects your own style.

Share your finished cactus creations online and tag Nichole and John Bead so we can see your work!

About Nichole Vogelsinger

Nichole’s creative journey began when, as a child, she would explore the local fabric shops with her mother. She developed a love for fiber arts and as an adult, hand embroidering printed fabrics became a favorite hobby. That hobby soon became an Instagram feed and then a book, Boho Embroidery (Lucky Spool, 2016) and then another book, Boho Embroidery: The Pattern Collection (Lucky Spool, 2018). She is the creator of the Boho Stitch Along, teacher of embroidery workshops and writer of her adventures in the world of stitchery at wildboho.com.
